
Harold E. Thompson has served on City Council since November 1998. His term as Mayor of the City of Union will expire in November 2024. He is a graduate of Temple Technical Institute of Broadcasting in Washington, D.C. and the Radio Engineering Institute of Broadcasting in Sarasota, Florida. He is a retired Photojournalist and Central Broadcast Operator from WSPA NEWS Channel 7 in Spartanburg, SC with 33 years of service. Mayor Thompson is a graduate of Leadership Union Class of 2000. He is also a graduate of the South Carolina Municipal Institute of Government and the South Carolina Economic Development School. He has completed the Crisis Leadership Development Training Program (FEMA) and has completed the Diamond and Platinum levels in the Leadership Program at the National League of Cities. He is a graduate of the advanced class of the SC Municipal Association and is a former board member of MASC. He currently serves as a Board Member of the Association of SC Mayors and is President of the SC African American Mayors Association. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Catawba Regional Council of Governments and also on the Executive Board of Directors. Mayor Thompson is recognized as a Riley Institute Diversity Fellow at Furman University for having completed the SC Diversity Leaders Initiative Upstate Class of XI. He is a member of Prince Hall Masons of South Carolina where he serves as District Deputy for Union, York, Chester, and Cherokee Counties, a member of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (and is a recipient of the Legion of Honor). He is a member of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite Masons PHA and a 33° Mason. He is also a member of St Luke Baptist Church in Buffalo, SC.
